A bit of history

Since working on the documentary series The Pacific: In the Wake of Captain Cook with Sam Neill (Essential media for the History Channel), I have been thinking and reading quite a bit about Captain James Cook. I learned some interesting facts that I wanted to share, and published my views in a recent edition of the Sun Herald. The opinion piece is here.

Exit Syria

Here’s my latest writing job, an up-close look at life in Za’atari, the world’s second largest refugee camp – home to tens of thousands fleeing the violence in Syria. I hope you enjoy Exit Syria.

Wall St Journal story

Here’s my latest piece, an insider’s guide to Buenos Aires, published in the Wall St Journal on Saturday 29 October 2011. I was delighted to have enjoyed lengthy and entertaining conversations with my four interviewees, including the legendary Robert Duvall, composer and producer Gustavo Santaolalla, chef Narda Lepes and artist and personaje Marta Minujín, whom I met in person at her terrific public artwork / happening La Torre de Babel last April.

a couple of recent opinion pieces

Back in Sydney after a stay to Buenos Aires that stretched from one month to four, including a side trip to Spain, Italy and Croatia.

While getting down to work on my book, I’ve been publishing a few pieces here and there. Here are my latest:

A discussion in The Punch of Australia’s most controversial exports: live cows and live refugees

A plug for gay marriage, also published in The Punch

Off to Argentina

I’ll be heading to Buenos Aires for a month in March, where I plan to do plenty of research for my book, and to write a few features for newspapers and magazines.
